You write one sentence
The whole book in a line. Something happens to someone.
You expand it to a paragraph
Sixty words at least, in your words. There's no upper limit.
You pick out its sentences
Three or more sentences from the paragraph you just wrote, each on its own line with a blank line between. Add or drop one later without redoing the rest.
You expand each of those
And on down. Odd layers divide, even layers expand. Below layer 3, what you divide into stops being one sentence each and becomes pieces of any length. Most books get long by branching, not by any one piece getting bigger. How far you take a passage is your call.

Layer 4, that sentence expanded again

At the bottom the wind came off the water hard enough to make her turn her face. When she turned it back he had not moved. She was still holding the boathook. She had carried it down to shift him into the water and she put it against the rock and left it there. The tide would do it or it would not. She went back up counting the same sixty-one and did not look down again.
The book is whatever you wrote deepest on each branch. Everything above it stays as outline and doesn't appear in the export, which is worth knowing before you start.
